Tom Cowan begins with an anecdote about his 1964 post-high school summer on the island; talks about moving here with his young family in 1974 and wearing multiple hats to patch together a living; and finally talks about his 12 years as San Juan County Commissioner highlighting the local issues which mattered to him most.

Betty Hastin, married to the famous Lopez Uncle Phil for 67 years, is the featured Once Upon An Island guest and shares her memoirs. She has been writing them down and you will hear her read them to you, while Allie and Rosie interrupt her when you tune in.  Betty has lived on Lopez all of her long life and is a treasure trove of Lopez history.

Alie Smaalders interviews Rosie Sumner about her early days on Lopez, starting from 1978 when she and her family moved to Odlin Park to caretake, on into the 80’s when she lived at the Old McCauley Farm.  You will hear about Islanders for Nuclear Arms Control and what community was like on Lopez for a young idealistic woman thirty years ago.
